Offshore drilling – Fact over fiction

Posted by sanityinjection on August 12, 2008

The WashPost has a superb op-ed up today on the offshore drilling issue. In typical fashion for the Post (and almost unheard of at most other major papers), the column sets aside partisanship and demagoguery and looks directly at the facts about oil, drilling, economics and energy inependence:

Amazing! A thoughtful and relatively unbiased editorial in the liberal elite media! And, the writer stayed on topic without the usual anti conservative rant. Perhaps there is hope after all; if liberals can accept that we need more oil and gas to power the economy while we develop alternatives then we stand a chance of success. New nuclear power plants will also contribute significantly to a cleaner environment and energy independence.

Liberals definitely believe and accept that. We just don’t trust oil companies when they say that. Most liberals would probably accept limited drilling if they say a true comparable drive toward alternative energy by a conservative government. We feel that this “tide over” won’t change anything. We’re going to have this same problem again in 5 or 10 years when THAT oil is gone while oil companies and conservatives hope that some new-fangled energy source will materialize out of academia.

We want to see government and oil companies funding alternative energy sources beyond token efforts right now, so that we don’t have this discussion again after executives reap another 5-10 years of superior profits and no long-term energy advances.

I.e. put the money where your mouth is, and then we can talk about drilling to tide us over.

    I agree.

How’s this: $100,000,000.00 to the company that creates the first practical LED replacement for standard household light bulbs. The prize to be dedicated to building a production facility in the USA.

$100,000,000. to the inventor of the first practical hydrogen fuel cell road vehicle capable of carrying six average size adults at normal highway speeds for 400 unrefueled miles at a retail selling price of thirty thousand or less. The prize dedicated to building a production facility in the USA.

$500,000,000.00 to the inventor of an ambient temperature super conductor. The prize dedicated to construction of a manufacturing facility in the USA.

There’s the idea, know any congressmen wiling to sponsor the legislation?

USAToday has a similarly well-thought out op-ed on this issue today:
