Anatomy of a smear campaign in the Internet Age

Posted by sanityinjection on September 22, 2008

I offer for your perusal a superb investigation done by the folks over at The Jawa Report blog, who decided to find out the source of the video clip that falsely alleged Sarah Palin was a member of the separatist Alaska Independence Party. The investigation showed that the video was produced and distributed by employees of a PR firm with strong ties to the Democrats and the Obama campaign. This is very long so you may want to skim it rather than read the whole thing. But it’s amazing to see the lengths to which these people go to to try to make these smears look like they come from grassroots sources:

It’s worth noting that the Democrats hardly have a monopoly on this type of sleaze – Republicans have their own PR firms that have pulled similar stunts in the past, though I’m not sure that the GOP is quite as Internet-savvy. I find myself wondering if we couldn’t do without this sort of filth in our political campaigns, and what good might be done with the money that is spent on it.
